The Dogwood Institute School of Fine Woodworking
was founded in 2004 by Ron Peyton, a woodworker with over 35 years of experience. The school is a result of his travels around the United States and consulting with many woodworking schools offering various programs. He has designed the school to teach students those techniques and skills necessary in taking their present skills to a new level.
The school is located in Alpharetta, Georgia just 14 miles north of Atlanta on a beautiful 13 acre horse farm. Our new barn has been completed and is fully air conditioned and heated with spacious room and twelve foot ceilings with dust collection systems. The classroom is completely furnished with woodworking equipment, eight foot Sjoberg benches, and includes two
SawStop tablesaws for maximum safety. We would be glad to give you a tour through the school, however, we ask that you call ahead for an appointment.
Classes are designed to concentrate on specific techniques. Individuals will be able to practice these techniques under the skillful guidance and direction of master woodworkers selected by the Institute. These instructors are from across the United States and from other countries with outstanding credentials and skills. Many of our instructors have published books and have been featured in major woodworking publications. Courses are designed for the individual who has little or no experience as well as for the experienced woodworker. Certificates of completion will be issued at the conclusion of each course. Courses normally are one, two, or five days in duration depending on the complexity of the content or project. Also, some courses may be lecture and demonstration only.
The Institute stresses “the
process of building furniture”, as opposed to “the
project itself”. Most woodworking schools place emphasis on building a project, however, it is the philosophy of the Dogwood Institute to teach
the process so that the student will have a firm understanding of “how to” build
many projects. Participants learn proper and safe techniques in a structured environment under the watchful eye of experienced instructors. Most classes will have a maximum of 12 students, however, this may vary according to the type class being presented.
